Suburban Sanctuary

A new garden was needed to complement the recently modernised house and to provide a haven for entertaining and relaxation. The grounds consisted of a narrow strip of land surrounding the house with the area at the front mainly taken up by a driveway. The house was overlooked on two sides by flats. In the design, smooth organic shapes create a friendly space and link the different areas of the garden together. Privacy has been improved by the careful placement of trees and the use of trellis above a raised bed. The low maintenance planting is diverse with over 110 different varieties to suit the wide range of growing conditions. There are woodland borders, areas with exotic foliage, long-flowering herbaceous perennial borders and plenty of evergreen plants for year round structure. Apart from the lawn, the garden requires just periodic maintenance and was only irrigated lightly in the first summer.

A Scot’s pine and two Ilex aquifolium ‘Argentea Marginata’ will eventually help to obscure the grey building in the background. The concrete pad in the foreground is for a hot tub which will be surrounded by a small cedar deck.
